NEW PHASE IN TURKISH VOCABULARY PROJECT: 1 MILLION STUDENTS FROM 26 CITIES WILL PARTICIPATE IN DATA COLLECTIONThe "Turkish Vocabulary Project" carried out by the Head Council of Education and Morality aims at making the classification and collection of words used in written and verbal language by students from different grades and preparing machine based learning tools according to this classification and collection. Till now, approximately 8 thousand students participated in written data collection as a part of this project which was initiated in 2018. Field work will be expanded in the new phase. 1 million students from 26 cities will participate in the written data collection. This study will be online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Turkish Vocabulary Project which was initiated by Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk in 2018 with a statement saying "May souls of those who make contribution to Turkish language since Kutadgu Bilig rest in peace" has reached an important phase.
The project includes phases such as observation and analyzing the written and verbal language that are used by students. Within the context of the project, written and verbal words used by children who are studying in different grades from 2nd grade to 12th grade will be defined, classified and frequency lists will be prepared. Moreover, language collections and classifications will be used to prepare machine based teaching tools.
"Turkish Vocabulary" which is one of the most important projects of the 2023 Education Vision will define which words are commonly used among all children, how the use of vocabulary changes according to age and how these words are used in books and other publications. Different Turkish vocabulary lists will be formed for different grades in order to allow children how to express themselves correctly in their mother tongue and develop their communication methods. This study will also serve as a guide for teachers, parents and all members of the society.
The project is carried out by the Head Council of Education and Morality in coordination with academicians from 23 universities and bureaucrats of the Head Council as well as the Department of Information Technologies, the Directorate General for Measurement, Assessment and Examination Services and directorates of national education.
Steps of the project are defined and pilot implementations concerning data collection process all over the country are planned. Within this framework, the first pilot implementation took place between May 27-31 2019 in Eskişehir and written data from a total of 2 thousand and 314 students from 5 different primary schools, 5 different secondary schools and 5 different high schools were collected. Data collection process and data entry interface were tested as a part of this pilot study and the study also allowed observation of operability of selected writing subjects.
Two phased second pilot studies were conducted between April 20-22 2020 and May 4-8 2020 in Eskişehir. The Ministry designed a secure interface where students can easily enter data in line with the measurements of Turkish Vocabulary Project with the support of the Eskişehir Provincial Directorate of National Education. Total of data were collected from 300 students from every grade level and the operability of the system was tested in the first phase. Verbal data from 5.595 students were collected in the second phase.
Data obtained from these phases were analyzed in line with the objectives of the project and necessary updates in the project process were completed. This new phase foresees data collection from 1 million students from 26 cities. This study will be online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
