2.3. SECONDARY EDUCATION

Secondary education includes all the general, vocational and technical education institutions that offer at least three years of education following primary education. The goals of general secondary education are to raise students as individuals who have a minimum general knowledge at the level of secondary education, who are familiar with problems of society and who contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of the country and to prepare them for higher education.Secondary education consists of two categories:

  • General secondary education; and
  • Vocational and technical secondary education.
  • General secondary education; and
  • Vocational and technical secondary education.

In the 2000-2001 academic year;

  • 2,1 million students receive education and 134,800 teachers serve at the 5,900 secondary education institutions.
  • 92% of the schools, 97% of the students and 94% of the teachers have official status.
  • 46% of the schools, 62% of the students and 53% of the teachers are in general secondary education.

2.3.1. General Secondary Education

General secondary education involves the education of children in the age group of 15 to 17 for a period of at least three years following primary education. The goals of general secondary education are to raise students as individuals who have a minimum general knowledge at the level of secondary education, who are familiar with problems of society and who contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of the country and to prepare them for higher education. General secondary education consists of high schools; Anadolu high schools; Anadolu teacher training high schools; Anadolu fine arts high schools; and multi-program high schools.

  • 1,300,000 students receive education and 71,300 teachers serve at the 2,700 general secondary education schools.
  • Of the schools in general secondary education, 57% are high schools, 17% private high schools, 15% Anadolu high schools, 5% multi-program high schools, 2% science high schools, 3% Anadolu teacher training high schools and 1% Anadolu fine arts high schools.
  • Of the students in general secondary education, 74.6% are in high schools, 4.3% in private high schools, 15.3% in Anadolu high schools, 2.3% in multi-program high schools, 0.8% in science high schools, 2.4% in Anadolu teacher training high schools and 0.3% in Anadolu fine arts high schools.
